Today, 1,600 babies will be infected with HIV from their mothers. But with the right drugs and prevention techniques this can be prevented. Just £7 a month can give children the chance of an HIV-free start in life. Tearfund needs to raise £60 million for HIV and AIDS-related work by 2015 – as part of its wider vision to lift millions out of poverty. It starts now with our Work a miracle appeal which aims to raise £2 million in the first year.
A key component of Tearfund's plan to stop the spread of AIDS by 2015 is to work through local partners to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
•£7 could give a child in Africa an HIV-free start in life each month, by testing mothers and providing counselling and crucial information
•£17 could train a group of churches to prevent HIV, care for orphans and support those affected by AIDS
•£51 could teach a whole community about HIV, breaking down fears and stigma and exploring safer cultural practices.
Red Balloon Appeal registered charity No. 1074850
Birmingham Children’s Hospital is a truly remarkable place. Each year, it
treats over 140,000 children - not just from Birmingham but from across the UK. That is because of the exceptional specialist medical care available at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. We know this for a fact as they have been looking after our own 9 year old son for the last 7 years! He has a rare metabolic condition called CPT2 and the quality of life he enjoys today is completely thanks to the doctors and staff at the Birmigham Children's Hospital.
The simple fact is that children get better more quickly in an environment
they like and even enjoy. And that is where The Red Balloon Appeal comes in.
Many children of the world live in desperate poverty, with no food and not even a roof over their head. They sleep under bushes, trees, boxes and rubbish, many are abused or left abandoned to die. Seeway Trust's mission is to provide some of these children with not only food and a roof, but also a caring home environment to allow them to flourish.
Seeway Trust also try and ensure their educational needs are catered for, so that they may grow up to be a useful part of the society in which they live. Sometimes this involves finding or building a suitable orphanage and supplying funds to cover the costs. Other times it means helping provide a school classroom, or starting a farm to provide food, supplying a nurse and setting up medical facilities.
